Got a romantic evening in planned in the near future? If so, and part of the plan involves snuggling on the couch and watching a movie on Netflix, you’re in luck. The Netflix library is almost too big to navigate. However, we’ve pulled together a small collection of date night favorites to help make the process easier!
Bear in mind that the library changes from time to time, so an item we recommend today may get rotated out. For this reason, we also provide an alternate pick for each movie on the list. That said, let’s get right to it!
Romancing The Stone
Although this movie has some age on it, having been released in 1984, it’s still a classic romantic comedy that’s well worth your time. Better still, even if you’re familiar with the story, it’s probably been a while since you watched it, so you won’t remember all the details as you start watching it again, and the chemistry between Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas is fantastic!
Alternate: If that one is missing in action, definitely give the more recent “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” a look. Starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, it makes for an absolutely hilarious cap to an evening with your special someone.
Safe Haven
If you haven’t seen this charming 2013 film, you owe it to yourself to put it on your date night list. Yes, it’s based on a book by Nicholas Sparks. Yes, it’s a bit formulaic, but the on-screen interplay between leads Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel (both of whom are highly underrated actors) is just outstanding. The ending is cheesy, but will leave you smiling and shaking your head nonetheless, and is absolutely satisfying.
Alternate: If that one’s no longer available, check out Phenomenon. Released in 1996 and starring John Travolta, this is a sweet, innocent, and strangely touching film.
Say Anything
John Cusack and Ione Skye team up to deliver a surprisingly fun, quirky, and endearing romantic movie that was released in 1989. It’s almost certain that you’ve seen it, but it’s one you’ll enjoy revisiting with that special someone in your life.
Alternate: If that one’s no longer on the menu, check out 2012’s “Silver Linings Playbook.” Starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, it’s another fabulous movie that should be on your must-see list.
Vanilla Sky
Even if you’re not a Tom Cruise fan, this 2001 film will catch your attention. Cruise plays a rich, entitled man who nearly loses everything when an accident disfigures him. Penelope Cruz comes to his rescue, and to say anymore will be to detract from the movie. Watch and enjoy.
Alternate: 2014’s “The Imitation Game.” This is a stunning, surprise hit starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley that will leave you sorry to see the credits finally roll. A truly great film.
Begin Again
Do you like music? Adam Levine? Keira Knightley? Mark Ruffalo? If you answered yes to even one of those questions, then you’re going to love quirky and original “Begin Again.” An unbelievably great movie, not to be missed.
Alternate: If that one has been rotated off the list, check out Titanic, James Cameron’s epic tale about one of the most epic maritime disasters of all time. One part love story, and one part unforgettable tragedy, it’s not to be missed.
And there you have it. Armed with this list, you’ll have no shortage of great movie selections to impress your significant other on date night. Enjoy!
