Captain Marvel actress Lashana Lynch has a brand new role – the new 007!

But wait, does that mean that the James Bond franchise has gone in the same direction as Dr. Who and made its title character a woman? Kind of, but not really. Allow us to explain more…

Lashana Lynch, who previously played fighter pilot Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel, will not become the new James Bond.

Instead, her character will take over as MI6’s 007 when James Bond allegedly goes into retirement. She will feature alongside current James Bond actor Daniel Craig in the latest movie, Bond 25. Is everyone keeping up?

“There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M says, ‘Come in 007’, and in walks Lashana who is black, beautiful and a woman,” a source very close to all the action reportedly told The Daily Mail.

“It’s a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond but he’s been replaced as 007.”

According to director Cary Fukunaga (as reported by The Daily Mail) the actress was said to be playing a character named “Nomi”. Whether that is still the case or whether it was used as an alias to throw fans off the scent is currently unclear.

There’s still no word on whether Idris Elba will make all our dreams come true as the first black James Bond, but having a black female lead in a position that isn’t a ‘Bond girl’ is a nice step in the right direction.
